King's School Photo Directory Updates - 2015

Updates Index - other years

15 December 2015 (UD15/08)
1) Dates of the next KS Reunion are Saturday 1st October to Sunday 2nd October 2016. Full details in Reunion News.

2) Michael Cranstone has joined our throng, he was at KS September 1963 to December 1964. Does anyone remember him? He reminds me about Dorm 93 - about the bats that sometimes flew into the room.

3) From time to time Old Boys ask me why there have been no recent Updates - the reason being no one has sent me anything new to put on the site.

26 July 2015 (UD15/07)
1) Spoke to David Powell, he was at KS 1947-48 - left mid-term when the whole school went down with Mumps! He never came back. He recalls the building of the Swimming Pool and of the Firing Range to the left beyond the pool; also working in the gardens.

2) Fahim Ahmad brings to my attention the BBC documentary on Radley College - a Public School. Although larger and different in many ways, you will see similarities to our school. Search on YouTube to see the 1980 films and the sequal years later of the boys' stories in "A Very English Education". There is write up similar to the after school biographies we are sharing with each other, FT

3) The 2015 Mini Reunion was enjoyed by all those who were lucky enough to be able to attend. Please see my report - hopefully someone can send me pictures of the Dining Room flat in due course.

14 June 2015 (UD15/06)
1) Clive Perkins recalls the Grandad incident slightly differently:
The jumping rabbit of lower Vc was in fact a yellow Daffy Duck bendy toy; I removed it from the grill of a visiting dustbin lorry. I also supplied the fishing line to effect of the now 'puppet' on Grandad (Walters) was hilarious and never to be forgotten.

He adds another joke on Grandad.

2) It has just been brought to my notice that Jimmy Shelley (KS c.1950) died last month - email me for funeral details.

12 May 2015 (UD15/05)
1) Roger Fowler (59-62), new to our throng since 2009, after hearimg about George Cooper recalls:
We were both incarcerated in Lower Vc for several terms (years?), and my abiding memory of George is when he strung up a bendy toy rabbit with fishing line along some hooks running up on the back wall of the room, in Grandad Waters' maths lesson. Grandad's attempts to catch it had us all in hysterics as George controlled it from his desk in the corner, and every time Grandad made a lunge for the rabbit George pulled it up to the ceiling out of reach. Priceless!

2) I wrote to 25 people who George was in the process of writing to - evidenced by the addressed envelopes. Brian Tuck (KS c.55-58) died 12 November 2013.

Jeffrey Lippiatt and Adrian Noble join the membership. Adrian adds a memory. Jeffrey recalls, "Peter Thompson knocking me out with a good left hook when I said something which he obviously objected to!" Richard Rudland wants to stay in touch; as does David Mossman.

Other than these, 2 want to stay on the mailing list, 4 returned as no longer at address and 10 simply did not reply.

5 April 2015 (UD15/04)
1) Roy Limbrick gives me the sad news of the passing away of David Burrough (KS 1956-59).

2) Rex Lerego said on reflection when hearing about George Cooper:
George was 'up school' from me so I didn't know him that well, we did however do some community service and run many 'early morning punishments' together and from those encounters I knew him to be a very decent chap. Whereas he seemed to really enjoy the running, I didn't.

He was always encouraging and said, 'If I can do it anyone can do it' that helped a lot. I was never sure how George got his punishment, he never complained. My crime was 'lost property' for each item missing I had to do 10 laps of front field! I would rather have done a Cross Country lap, but of course we could be observed doing the front field, whereas out of sight on the Cross Country there was always the chance of a quick stop at Home Farm where Bill & Roy's mum would always serve up a tasty treat. Believe me it was 100 times better than the meagre breakfast offerings at King's. Anyone remember the Boiled Egg morning?

3) Richard (Alex) Samson has found a photo album given to him by Mr Benn (Maths teacher c. 1950). It has many images of A Year at King's School. Hopefully I will get to copy some of the pictures for you. I am told one is of the masters using an ice slide. So watch this space.

18 February 2015 (UD15/03)
1) It is with great regret that I inform you of the demise of George Cooper (KS 1958-63). He rang me yesterday and complained of a pain in his back. Jim Rowe telephoned me this morning to give me the sad news. I will post funeral arrangements when known.

As far as the planned Lea Marston Reunion for July maybe someone would like to pick up the reins. The Sherborne and Barrington venues remain unaffected.

8 February 2015 (UD15/02)
1) Thanks to David Nee (Ngai) for spotting John Drew to the left of the master in the Swimming team photo.

2) Thanks to Angus McLellan for adding a some names to Simon's pictures

3) Tim Hayter has joined our group - he was at KS until age 13 and left in 1958. Ask me if you would like his email address. He tells me that on the 1958 photo he appears on the back row 12 from the right, between Attabai and Davies just behind Gay and Allen.

He remembers that, “Moss 2 beat me into 2nd place in the 440 and, yes, it still hurts!!” His saving grace was that he won the 100 and 200 yard races. He recalls 23 other memories on his page.
