King's School Photo Directory Updates - 2014

Updates Index - other years

16 December 2014 (UD14/11)
1) Patrick Delaney corrects my wording in the first item below: Simon Dickson Swan means that he portrays one of the ’bad boys’ in "If" . [Not that he was one of them. The film premiered in December 1958, two years before Simon went to King's. He adds, having seen the film, that the school in "If" was not really like KS but more like an old fashioned English Public School. Thank you, Patrick. Ed.]

2) Peter Curtis has been in touch and promises to send some pictures.

3) Deleted as obsolete.

29 September 2014 (UD14/08)
1) It has been suggested that old boys send me a paragraph of their lives after Kings? [I could distribute this as part of the general Updates but such personal details would not go on the website]."

2) Fahim Ahmad says, that "Phil Blakeway (KS c.1965) played Rugby for Gloucestershire and for England. I remember we used to do the short Windrush 1.5 mile cross country run together (by the way, the Clapton run was 7 miles, to be done in 49 minutes)."

3) Reunion attendance was high at Sherborne and Barrington, but a little smaller at the Midlands venue. Details of those who were there. Patrick Delaney managed to get a picture of us at the Fox.

I would welcome a report from someone else who was at one of the venues, in order to provide a fresh perspective.

26 August 2014 (UD14/07)
1) Bill StAubyn has given a link to a BBC Gloucestershire page with a picture of Sherborne House in the snow - scroll down.

He also put me in touch with Mike Robinson who is a National Trust Ranger for Sherborne and Lodge Park. He has offered to meet us at the church on reunion day 20th September about mid-day. He is the one who took the photo above. He is fascinated by the website and especially photos of Sherborne House and surrounding landscape. He would be happy to chat to Old Boys about the estate and if time allows walk along the brook and show our group some sights off the beaten track.

3) Fahim Ahmad I has listed two Anecdotes.

10 August 2014 (UD14/05)
1) I have been informed by Nick Sweet of the sad demise of his brother John Sweet on 17 July - he was 88 years old. He was until then probably the oldest Kingsholme Old Boy; though he had a friend Clive Gribble a little younger who is still alive.

2) I have added a further 20 names of boys who attended KS - taken from the Sweet Ration list of 1950 - bringing the total to 685.

15 July 2014 (UD14/04)
1) Myself and a few other old boys went to Al Hawkes's funeral to give him a good 'send off.' There were Bob Marshall, Malcolm Stacey, Bob Curtis, Richard Hole, and David Wright and his wife. The church was nearly full with Al's family, and friends. His sons spoke of how their father had organised treasure hunts in the garden and encouraged his sons, against some resistance, to master the skill of Cricket. They enlightened us on Al's background and his life journey.

2) Malcolm Stacey sent me a link to a very nice article and pictures in the Daily Telegraph about The Famous clothing shop's history prior to closing down. You may recall this coming up in the Update (UD13/02) last year.

3) Deleted as obsolete.

1) It is with a very heavy heart that I inform you of Alwyn Hawkes' demise yesterday afternoon. I have no other details but will notify you when I do. I, as I am sure many of you, will have fond memories of Alwyn. We can all remember his phenominal memory of all things to do with King's School. Of his tri-yearly Sherborne Reunions and his resounding toast, "Servabo Fidem!" He will be greatly missed.

2) I know you are all grateful for my work on the site and tell me how much you enjoy my email updates. But apart from the few kind old boys, who over the years have slipped me a note or two, many of you will be unaware of any financial cost. Unlike most site owners I do not have advertising on the site to fund it - and hope to keep it that way. So for your information, recently I renewed the two King's School domains for another 2 years. The co.uk cost £7.18 and the .com £20.38 I have both for your convenience. If I am still among you all in 2 year's time, as the Auctioneers say, "Fair warning!" I will be dropping the .com

3) Some people search the site for the strangest things - in March someone was looking for a "Bill Hofmann" or "wphofmann" - I doubt they found "William Hoffman"! It is wise when using a search engine to know how a name could otherwise be spelled.

4) I had an email from a lady researching her grandfather, Charles John Payne who was at Kingsholme in 1920. She sent a couple of pictures. I have added to that page. Please scroll down.
