King's School Photo Directory Update - 2005 Archive Page

Down to other years Updates links

Monday 27th December 2005 (UD05/15)
1) As I promised I have now scanned the rest of the School Magazines in my possession - 1953, 1954, 1955, 1957, 1958, & 1960. Just go here to access them.
I wonder if anyone can tell me why years 1952 & 1953 are set apart on the page - I have checked the code and cannot fathom it out.

2) George Cooper's site is still down and incidentally "kingsschoolsherborne.com" is up for sale! So I have added the 2004 Belfry Reunion picture and names.

3) I believe I now have practically the whole of the archive on site. So if you want more - you will need to send me more.

Monday 28th November 2005 (UD05/13)
1) I have spoken to George Cooper about his Reunion site, which he has had to take down temporarily. However he informs me that the next Reunion will be at the usual venue on Saturday 8th July 2006. Details to be mailed nearer the date.

2) Thanks to those of you who took an interest in the item on Abuse (UD05/12) I read your responses with interest though do not intend to publish them.

Saturday 8th October 2005 (UD05/12)
1) I have added another category to the top of the Directory list - Abuse?. Much damage is done to children - by well meaning parents sending them away to Boarding School - for their own good. I would encourage you to read the article and if you think this may apply to you then there are links to sites that may help.

Wednesday 6th July 2005 (UD05/11)
1) Barbara (UD05/09) has kindly sent me a copy of a picture of the Sherborne Cottage where she resided as a child when in Sherborne. It is now linked from her page or here.

Monday 20th June 2005 (UD05/10)
1) I now have a very interesting collection of memories from Barbara (UD05/09) below. As clearly she is not an Old Boy I have given her the status of Friend of King's School. You can read her anecdotes here.

2) Corrected title year of first magazine to 1947, Will change file names when I get round to it. There is no urgency unless someone comes up with the 1948 magazine!

3) Added 1949 magazine. Note that there were still 4 houses: Grenfell, Lister, Eddington & Ross. Does anyone recall when they doubled up - and why?

Friday 17th June 2005 (UD05/09)
1) I have been informed By Nigel Dodds of the death of Frank Jefferson WINN (Headmaster). He died on 26 July 1986 age 68. Born 14 March 1918 in Haumsterley, Durham. I have added his name to the In Memoriam page.

2) I received an interesting email from a lady whose father served as an USAF Officer at Fairford R.A.F. Station. They lived at "The Cottage at Sherborne," which she also describes as the dowager's residence. She lived there between 1954 - 1957. She now lives in Tennessee, USA. Her name is Barbara. I would be interested to hear of anyone knew of her, though she schooled in Cheltenham at that time. Although as she states 'not one of the Old Boys,' living across the road from the school fixes her association in space and time with King's School.

3) Added the first King's School Magazine - circa 1948_KS_Mag.pdf">1947. Vol.1 No.1. (I have Vol. 1 No. 3 dated 1949, but not No.2 - can anyone help?)

1) I have been informed that Peter Thomas was at the school from 1958 so have amended details.

Monday 2nd May 2005 (UD05/08)
1) I have been asked by Nigel Dodds to add this to the Update - "It is with great sadness that I have to tell you all of the sad death of PETER THOMAS, English Master at Kings between 1960 and 1963. Peter was born on 13 May 1913 and died on 27 March 2005, age ninety one years."

2) Added 6 photographs from Richard Hole - 2 photographs of School Play - can someone confirm for me that all of these pictures are of Julius Caesar? 2 of the building and 2 of The Boys.

Sunday 24th April 2005 (UD05/07)
1) I have added names to all of Nick Sweet's collection - you can see these by simply hovering your mouse over the thumbnails. If you want to see the large picture at the same time you will need to open 2 browser windows. Thanks again Nick for taking the trouble to identify the majority of the people for me. As usual if anyone disputes a name - just let me know and I will change it.

2) During Nick Sweet's time at King's he was to be confirmed in the adjacent church - however a rift between JHM and the temporary Vicar put a stop to that. In Nick's words, "both parties were immovable objects." Although the Vicar's letter was marked Private and Confidential, since over 46 years have past I am publishing it in its entirety. The response of JHM is also presented. Both can be found in the section School Documents 7. The dates being march and June 1959 respectively.

3) Nick has also uncovered an Insurance scheme to cover parents for loss of fees should their child be unable to attend school due to illness. This can also be found on the School Documents 7 page.

4) Nick's collection of letters to parents have been added as School Documents 8. Here you will see "Dear Parents..." for 1957 to 1960.

5) A contribution from John Mann from 1947-48 includes football team and names, playing positions for Hockey 1st IX, autographs from Teachers & staff 1947/48.

Saturday 16th April 2005 (UD05/06)
1) I have added magazines for 1962 and 1963 - thanks to Angus McLellan. The next magazines will be 1950s - for the older set.

2) I have rearranged the School Plays section - it is now in chronological order.

3) Added to Documents a copy of the front of the King's School Christmas card as sold to boys in the 50s; also a Tea Ticket for Exhibition Weekend.

Thursday 14th April 2005 (UD05/05)
1) Angus McLellan loaned me a lot of pictures and other documents for scanning. I have incorporated most of them into existing sections, School Play, School Documents, Sports day Field Events (last 5 photos) etc.

I am very pleased to have had the opportunity to scan some school Magazines. I have just completed 1965 and have 1962 and 1963 of his in hand. It is interesting to note that 1952 had just 10 pages while later years have at least 30.

2) As I have not received any feedback as to whether you favour viewing magazine pages in pdf format as opposed to jpg, I will be discontinuing pdf because it involves me in more work. Also on some pages I have offered images in both High and Low resolution - again having not received any encouraging feedback will only be offering a single resolution in future.

3) After receiving some ideas of what to do with the many reels of 16 mm film held in safe keeping by Willie Watson, I will be attempting to identify any lengths that could be incorporated into a slightly longer School Video in DVD format. Once we have the images safely committed to disk it seems that the most practical way we can ensure the school's memory continues is to give the archive into the safe keeping of Gloucester Council's Record Office.

4) This week both Roger Allen and John Allen joined the KS community. Roger gave me some very interesting anecdotes and opened my eyes to what I had missed at school.

Friday 1st April 2005 (UD05/04)
1) By now I guess all the people who ordered one or more Old Boy's ties will have received them. If anyone else who has not expressed their interest already wishes to purchase a tie at £17 including UK post and package, please email me - see 'Contact me' at the bottom of the Directory page and I will pass your details on to Alwyn. They are of decent width and length far more suited to the neck of an adult than the school boy ties of the first edition.

2) For those of you who donated towards the King's School Memorial, you may be interested to see where the remainder of the money went. You can view the PCC's 'Thank you' letter that Al received here.

3) I am grateful to Roy Limbrick for giving us a new slant on life at school - which you can find in his Personal Collection here. He has drawn our attention to the graffiti/ tree carving, especially in regard to one of the Winn girls! There are also a couple of recent pictures of the building that have come out quite nicely.

Sunday 13th March 2005 (UD05/03)
1)Although no actual update to the site at this time, I am using this medium to get your attention and hopefully your suggestions. I need your consideration in a matter concerning the film of KS and Mr Mosey etc, held by Willie Watson at the moment - he informs me that the film stacks about 3 feet high. What are we to do with this large archive he has custody of?

When none of us have any use for the material - that is when we are all too old to care - I have the interest of the Senior Cataloguer at Gloucestershire Council's Record Office who will preserve the film for posterity.

Quote: "... life at the school 1948-67 - it sounds fascinating and just the sort of material we would be happy to preserve here. We have a dedicated cold strongroom for photographic media where we would store the original 16mm film. If you had spares of the videotape copies, these would be useful as we could make them available in our search room. We would also be pleased to receive other records - if any exist - about the school."

I replied and she also: " I look forward to hearing from you when you are ready to arrange their transfer here incidentally, records can be deposited on long term loan or donated - in the former case, they remain the property of the owner."

I would be grateful for any suggestions you may have.

2)For those of you interested in the Dutton family, she adds that "The Sherborne catalogue (D678) can be found from the Record Office homepage Click on Links: Record Office Online Catalogue then click on 'Search Catalogue' if you type 'Sherborne House' in the AnyText field that should bring up 17 specific entries within the Sherborne Estate Archive clicking on the blue underlined number on the left takes you to the full description of that particular record. Advice on searching the catalogue is on the first page 'How to use this database.'"
To save you a click, I have it here. (Conrad.)

Wednesday 26th January 2005 (UD05/02)
1) Added some names to the Attendance Register - thanks to Richard Statham.

2) Alwyn Hawkes reports that we are nearly ready to purchase the minimum run of Old Boys Association ties. Even so it is likely that he will have to retain more than he had hoped. So if anyone, who has not already asked either myself or Alwyn for a tie, would like to order one please let me know. Owing to the low number requested he may have to charge an additional £1 to cover costs - making it £17 per tie. I will be emailing a letter from Alwyn to all the people who have ordered them in a few weeks time.

Tuesday 4th January 2005 (UD05/01)
1) You will now find last year's updates relegated to their own page, by clicking the link below. I would however like any feedback you can give on the final Updates of the year (UD04/15) & (UD04/16) - large personal collections.

2) I have done a massive update involving new format and rearrangement of the sections Published Articles, School Documents and School Plays. Where possible I have provided both High and Low resolution scans - though this takes more than double the work I think it worth the effort - given the time. I hope you like the new look. Let me know if you find a duff link - but I think I checked them all.

3) This was done when finding appropriate siting for dozens of scans of documents and pictures loaned to me by Jim Knight! Though he has only a small page of Personal Photos, he provided Newspaper Cuttings not seen before (by me), Sports Programmes and Results - under Documents, and a number of years Programmes from School Plays - together with a few really nice pictures of Twelfth Night.

Again under Documents - not to be missed are an Application form to attend King's School, an Invoice for Term Fees, and a fascinating little book - published in it's entirety - a record of Community Points, suggesting that work is a commodity that earns points - towards the back of the book however we discover a record of money lending and illicit alcohol consumption!

The amount of data is huge - it will be some time before I personally can get round to analyse it, but includes boys and staff names and dates in newspapers and other documents. Still to do is Jim's School Report!

4) I have had a very interesting letter from a relative of Ian Kjaer who attended King's in 1951-52. Unfortunately he does not have direct internet access but has asked if anyone remembers him. In 1951 he was 17 (born 1934, July 9th) and came from Denmark. He comes from a tobacco family and himself worked for the Scandinavian Tobacco Company until he retired a few years ago. He now lives in Jutland.
