King's School Photo Directory Update - 2003 Archive Page

Down to other years Updates links

Sunday 14th December 2003 (UD03/22)
Major change to presentation of the KS Directory page

The Directory of pages is now in the left hand margin, much more clear and easier to link from. This has I think made the page much shorter and easier on the eyes.

Al Hawkes has sent an update on the Altar Rail Memorial. Link to this here. There is a further link to a sketch and description.

Sunday 30th November 2003 (UD03/20)
1) Thanks to William StAubyn (KS 1959-64 and a member of Eddington-Ross) who sent me a scan of a report of the Twelfth Night play put on in Autumn Term 1963. From this we get a great deal of information regarding who was at school that term - quite apart from their role or duties.

2) New anecdote from Richard Hole

Friday 24th October 2003 (UD03/19)
On legal advice I have added a disclaimer to the Anecdotes page. This said I think it unlikely that anyone except an Old Boy would be the least bit interested in the recollections from their school days.

Sunday 19th October 2003 (UD03/18)
1) Additions to School Documents - a new page 2 - Fred Thomas kindly provided some School and House Rules and his personal Linen List.
2) There is also a copy of JHM's Death Certificate

3) Thanks to Richard Hole for a few names added to the Attendance list.

Sunday 19th October 2003 (UD03/17)
1) The Anecdotes page has grown hugely. There are contributions by Clive Perkins, Dave Wright, John Church and a huge contribution of about 30 items from the prolific hand of Mike Abbott - how he remembers all that stuff is simply amazing.

2) Amendments to the names in the Kingsholme picture with thanks to Richard Statham and Tony Walsh.

3) Names on the 1949 and 1950 School Photos and others thanks to Christopher Norman.

4) Considerable changes/ additions to the information in the Staff page of the Attendance Register - again many thanks to Mike Abbott.

5) I have a copy of the Death Certificate of Mr Mosey which shows he was born in Scarborough, Yorkshire in 1904 and died in retirement at Nether Stowey, Bridgwater 23rd February 1979. This was a surprise to me I thought he was much older - but then as a lad at school anyone who was more than 20 years older than me was ancient! Perhaps being known as 'the old man' gave him a certain seniority. Thanks to Tony Walsh and Richard Statham for the information.

Monday 18th September 2003 (UD03/16)
1) Alwyn Hawkes asked me to post an update here.

2) I have added a "subscribe" and "un-subscribe" boxes to the main page of the KS site. From here you can easily sign up for Updates about the site and related KS information. Similarly you can un-subscribe in order to change your email address or to have your name removed from the list.

3) Many thanks to Mike Abbott for pulling together so many names for the 1956 School Photo. I am now working on his anecdotal stuff - watch this space.

4) Again Mike has given dates for the Attendance Register - well over 50 names with dates

Monday 1st September 2003 (UD03/15)
1) Update on Altar Rail Memorial. Alwyn Hawkes reports that subject to everyone honouring their pledges we should just scrape up enough money. In order that the Diocese covering the area of Sherborne does not take a cut of this donation - considered income if paid directly to the Parochial Church Council, it will not be possible to write cheques directly to the church. So a special account has been created; I will not post banking details here but if you e-mail me I will let you know to whom you should make out the cheque. However Al is writing with these details to all who contacted him in due course.

For those able to attend (sometime next year) there will be a small get together at about £5 per head.

2) I have now corrected the picture of Kingsholme School to the 'real one' as confirmed by a number of Kingsholme students who attended there prior to moving to King's School.

I have also included a picture of the site as it is now, but you have to click on a link to find it to save the feelings of those who may wish to keep the nostalgia of the old picture.

Monday 25th August 2003 (UD03/14)
1) Update on Altar Rail Memorial. Alwyn Hawkes tells me that we have reached our target. He will contact all concerned by post in the near future to say who their cheque should be made out to.

2) It seems that I may have an incorrect picture on my site supposedly Kingsholme School, Christopher Norman's research is challenging this belief. Any views would help me to straighten things out.

Friday 1st August 2003 (UD03/13)
1) Update on Altar Rail Memorial. I am reliably informed by Alwyn Hawkes that we have reached about half way towards the target of £1,300. The majority of the money generously pledged by the old boys from the earlier years - come on lads get a bit of the action!

2) New section to the Directory - "Anecdotes etc." I have had a number of these from various 'boys' though in not wishing to offend any people depicted or their families I am carefully weighing up how to adapt some of them. Be assured they will appear in due course. Let us start with a real curiosity I found on a completely unrelated site. It features a number of stamps on a couple of parcels sent from Cyprus in 1948 to Mr Mosey at King's School.

3) The link to George Cooper's Reunion information site is mow defunct as he has taken his site down - use the Reunion link on this page list.

4) Some additions to Staff Register and some changes to boys details - many thanks to Clive Perkins (1958 - 1963)

5) Large Personal Collection by Christopher Norman (1947 - 1951)

6) I have some interesting stuff from Fred Thomas who was possibly the last to leave KS as he took the school bell with him! The Dormitory List for Summer Term 1967 tells a sorry tale - see how few boys were there. More from Fred when I have sorted through the Rules.

Friday 27th June 2003 (UD03/12)
1) Memorial to King's School At the last Reunion it was suggested that some sort of plaque be commissioned as a memorial to King's School and to all of us who attended or worked there. You may wish to contribute towards this worthwhile cause, to this end I have temporarily posted a copy of a letter from Alwyn Hawkes, explaining the details.

Just drop me an email giving me your telephone number and address - I will then pass your details to Alwyn.

2) I have started a new section called School Documents. To start this off Christopher Norman has kindly sent me a copy of the 1950 Sweet Ration List, an interesting reminder of one of the many forms of rationing remaining after the Second World War. In those days we were only permitted by the government to have 20 ounces of sweets per person per month. Approximately 1\4lb or about 100 grams. I have been promised a copy of the School Rules soon so watch this space.

3) Richard Statham still has a few copies of the school video. The one that was shown at the Belfry a year or so back. I have a copy - it is quite nostalgic. It shows some early footage of the building of the swimming pool and many more interesting events. There is also a tour of the building as it is now. Well worth the money - only £5 including postage within the UK. International postage by arrangement.

If anyone would like a copy drop me an email and I will pass your details - postal address, email, telephone number on to Richard. He will then contact you to sort out the details.

4) Minor additions to Attendance Register.

Sunday 22nd June 2003 (UD03/11)
Added a few photos from Bob Gabaldoni to Personal Collections. Also made some slight changes and additions to the Attendance Register.

Saturday 21st June 2003 (UD03/10)
1) I have included Teachers and other staff on the Attendance Pages - again this is only a start - I cannot even remember all the staff during my own time at King's. Please let me know via this site or Friends Reunited if you have any information I can add such as First Names, Subjects taught, Dates of Attendance or what they did if they did not teach.

2) I have also started to add names to the 1955 and 1956 School Photographs. Again, please anyone can you suggest some names of your schoolmates - perhaps the Attendance Register pages will prompt your memory.

3) For those of you who have an interest in such things - these pages are coded longhand - I do not use an HTML editor because they insert loads of code of their own - making it very difficult to decipher and make amendments. So to Matrix fans - if you see a glitch in the code just remember that this is a handwritten virtual site and the "White Rabbit" could appear at any time!

Tuesday 10th June 2003 (UD03/09)
New category added! An all years Attendance Register sadly it is incomplete - but though I say so myself I think I have made a good start. For full details click on the link and see how I have presented it. Only you can make it as accurate as it can be - by letting me know of any ommissions, errors, etc.,

Surely you remember at least one year when you associated with your KS school chums - that information would help to put flesh on the skeletal Register I have started. My best source of data are old School Magazines - I make no apology for asking again for years 1950, 1951, 1956, 1959, 1961 & 1964 onwards.

I have had 2 very useful mailings from Brian Lewis and Dave Wright with photos and names - so check back to 'School Photos' from time to time to see if more names have been added. I probably won't add an update for every addition or amendment. But if you give me a lot of information I will post your name on the site (unless you wish to remain anonymous!)

Tuesday 13th May 2003 (UD03/08)
1) I have added names to the 1950 School Photo. The hard work of recalling them came again from Alwyn Hawkes. They arrived in lists, I hope I have put them down accurately - always difficult with a single shot non-stretch photo like this. I think he deserves a drink when it comes to the next reunion.

2) This anecdote has been contributed by Richard Statham - it focuses on Mr Pfaff one of the teachers on the 1950 photo. "Peter Pfaff married, I think it must have been Miss Loxton - no scandal, all above board - and left to join the Fleet Air Arm. That would have been in about '51 or '52, but I'm not sure. When I was learning to fly in the RAF I did a cross-country flight from Tern Hill to Syerston, which had been a Naval Air Training station at one time and in the "line book", a book of photos and sayings of the various courses that went through training there, whose photo should I find but Peter's. I understand he was killed deck landing, a Highly Dangerous Thing To Do, though in flying terms the pinnacle of pilot skill, particularly in those days with no angled deck or "meat ball" to guide you down to the deck, just a guy with a couple of ping pong bats!" (Richard will update this if he manages to uncover a little more.)

3) I have now archived the 2002 updates to a page of their own via the link at the bottom of the page. I think all the links still work.

Sunday 5th May 2003 (UD03/07)
1) I have added names to the 1953 & 1954 School Photos. I should have them up for 1950 very soon. I have not had any alterations sent for the 1949 names - perhaps a bit early for most. Have a look at '53 & '54 - surely someone knows who the N/Ks are.

2) Also added the 2002 Belfry picture and names.

Friday 2nd May 2003 (UD03/06)
1) I have added a new group, namely School Reports . Please send me 'the good, the bad and the ugly' and I will add selected ones to my pages.

2) I am currently working on a School Attendance Register; I am gleaning my evidence from such as School Magazines. I am missing a few years - namely 1950, 1951, 1956, 1959, 1961 & 1964 onwards. It may be that the magazine was not published for all the years - if you know of any gaps then equally I need to know. If anyone is prepared to send me any of these they may have I will return them by Recorded Delivery - but contact me first because I don't want to be like the newly wedded couple who received 27 toasters! Of course simply sending me the dates you attended would be great - remember to state both Surname and first name, plus if appropriate, I, II or III.

3) I will also add more School Photos if you let me borrow them - or perhaps you would scan them and e-mail to me. If you can help it would be very useful if you were able to give a stab at some of the names.

4) On that note - I am still short of a few names to those already listed - can anyone help?

Saturday 26th April 2003 (UD03/05)
I have added an AOL banner to the top of my  Homepage  - this gives you the opportunity to send me an Instant Message when I am on line, Chat with other ex-KS or friends of mine in a dedicated chat room and download the AOL software if you do not have it already.

Thursday 24th April 2003 (UD03/03)
1) This Update features the latest Personal Collection series. This time from one of the founder members, as he started his KS days at Kingsholme. I intend to retain these Personal Collections on the site for the time being so that people of the same period (era) can find appropriate material. For your direct link to Richard's first page click here.

2) Some of you may have noticed that I am putting extra information about the pictures in what is called the 'Alt' tag in my coding - this is revealed when you let your mouse hover over the thumbnail pictures (assuming you have 'hover' enabled). It is usually a description of the picture - who is in it etc, the file name (in some cases) and the size of the larger picture and number of bytes - this gives an indication of how long it might take to appear on the screen. Again I would be grateful if you could let me know of any information I could add or if you disagree with anything I have included. I have no current plans to include a description under each picture as this takes more time than I have a available. Finally in the unlikely event that you find a bad link please let me know.

Monday 21st April 2003 (UD03/02)
Thanks to the sterling work of Alwyn Hawkes, I have been able to make my first School Photo Names Page. This is a list of all the names of the people he has researched to date as being in the School Photo of 1949. Given time I will be adding the names for years 1950, 1953 & 1954 too. For now simply click here to go to the School Photo page - then click on the [1949 Names?] link

Alwyn would be the first to say that he may not be exactly right in all cases, so it is up to you to put him right via the site e-mail address.

Monday 21st April 2003 (UD03/01)
1) I have added a small collection to "Personal Collections", this time Chris King's photos come under the spotlight. Click here to go straight there! I hope to publish Richard Statham's collection soon - keep checking!

Chris asks, to please contact him via the site e-mail address if you see yourself in any of these pictures and have not had any contact with him for many years. If not perhaps you know what has happened to any of them. Who is the un-named boy standing on the right, in the group of four?

2) Sadly it has been brought to my attention that 2 ex-KS have recently died.

Jerry Spikins, 3 February 2003, age 68.
Geoff Perry, MBE 18th January 2000, age 72.
